I Say "I Know"
You say, "I love you."
I say, "I know."
It's not the right answer.
I've hurt you so.
See, it's not that I don't.
It's just not the same.
I'm holding a candle.
You're consumed by flame.
You said, "I love you" one year ago.
I've been waiting and hoping for my love to grow.
I feel warmth; I feel comfort.
Not passion or desire.
I can't turn the embers into a fire.
Perhaps I should just say the words.
It would not be a lie.
But I'm afraid if I say them,
You'll think that I see us on the same path,
Our whole lives through.
And when the truth sinks in,
You'll feel like I've been using you.
You said, "I love you."
I said, "I know."
It was not the right answer.
You said it's time for me to go.
